Prague

Welcome to Prague

So, this was one of the easiest and cheapest trips I’ve ever taken. The whole city is completely walkable and you can get from one side to another in like an hour. It’s beautiful and colorful and definitely one of the most interesting places I’ve ever been. (Lots of people go there for sex vacations, I guess?) So, here we go.

Places to stay: My boyfriend and I took this weekend for a trip just the two of us, so we wanted a nicer hotel. But when I say that, for three nights, it was a 5 star hotel for 100 dollars total each. (That’s 33 bucks a night are you joking??)  It’s called Eurostars Thalia Hotel. Smack dab in the middle of the city, a block away from the river. We booked it on booking.com so I would suggest that just to be safe.

But, if you’re a bigger group as I’m assuming most are, check out (Czech out… HAHA so funny) Hostel One Home. Like, 20 bucks or less per night, pretty good location (it’s right next to a tram), and is rated really highly on hostelworld.com.

Also look at Prague Square Hostel. It’s not rated as high, but I don’t know why. It’s smack dab in the middle of everything super cheap, (17 dollars per night??) That would be my vote. But it’s good to have options. Also, don’t buy food in the square!! It’s too expensive don’t waste your time.

Things to Eat:

You gotta get a cheese sausage or a spiral potato on a stick. They’re just fun. You will get your fill of potatoes, potato dumplings,  pork and beef so don’t worry about finding that anywhere you go at all.

Have some Goulash. It’s like a meat stew, but it’ll fill you up legit all day.

Places to Eat:

I don’t know how to say it, but vzatisi was the best meal I’ve ever had in my entire life. I wish I were exaggerating because it’s expensive, roughly 50 bucks for a full meal. But I’m telling you. GO THERE NOW. Go there yesterday, legit. If you’re with you parents or are feelin’ real spendy, check out Mlýnec. Especially if you’re there in the summer, it looks right over the Charles’ Bridge and the inside is gorgeous, but the price is in the same range (they’re sister restaurants). But if you’re walking around the city, anywhere you stop in will be good. I don’t think I had one bad meal.

U Fleku: super cheap, it’s the oldest pub in Prague and they make their own beer and shots.

There’s also a sandwich shop right next to the KFC it was so inexpensive and SO good. I can’t remember what it’s called. The KFC also sucked.

Things to See and Do:

Definitely check out the Prague Castle. You can easily spend an afternoon there with a short pass ticket. Make sure you go to the Golden Lane, it’s really cool and you can shoot this massive gun thing, which was exciting. There’s also an overlook of the city and the river with a bell tower. You can watch the guys pull the bells too.

Sex Machines Museum. Just go, it’s funny and an interesting thing to see.

Franz Kafka Museum if you’re feelin’ cultured. Guy was a freak of nature, but very interesting.

Astronomical Clock Tower. Go up to the top and see all of the Prague Square and the rest of the city.

So many Synagogues! Which are rare in Europe so go and see those!! (Jubilee, Old New, Spanish are all cool ones)

If you can see a ballet at the Prague National Theater, do it.

Infant Jesus of Prague- People love it. I’m not sure why.

We went to a strip club. I’d never been, but girls go for free. There’s a place called Night Gym. It was definitely an interesting thing to watch.

Night Life:

MONDAY: If looking for a chill night after traveling definitely hit up U Sudu, otherwise Roxy and M1 Lounge both places are located on Dlouha. M1 is kind of overpriced but a cool vibe and Roxy can be sketchy (aka way too many dudes), but don’t fret, this will be your quietest night in Prague. Usually check out Roxy after 1 a.m.

TUESDAY: Tuesday night is Chapeau Rouge night. Chapeau is located just off of Old Town Square and is a clubby bar. Two floors; upstairs is the traditional bar scene with live music and downstairs they have a DJ playing house and hip hop. Much more of a club feel downstairs. Chapeau Rouge always has drug dealers by the bathrooms every night. So if you ever need weed or pills, that’s the place to go. You can also smoke weed downstairs.

WEDNESDAY: This night is either Mecca or Nebe. Mecca is rated one of the top clubs in the world, Mecca is what you think when you think typical European nightclub. Again two floors. Upstairs DJ’s spin really great house and techno. If you aren’t in the mood to listen to that, downstairs is all 90’s American hip hop and pop. Very fun as well. Drink prices are okay, but Mecca was always an awesome time. Located in Prague 7. About less then half way through the program, we all got sick of Mecca. The move then became Beer Factory (my favorite place in all of Prague) and then to Nebe which is right next door. Beer Factory is like a mini Oktoberfest where they have tables that compete against each other and each table gets its own tap. You can just keep refilling the tap. It is the ultimate pregame spot, the beer is delicious, and we always had a great time in large groups. Eventually everyone just gets really drunk and dances to the great music and on the tables and benches. After that, head to Nebe right next door to order buckets of mixed drinks, in which there are it least 10 straws and everyone just drinks up. The buckets can really do you in so be careful, but Wednesday was probably my favorite night in Prague.

THURSDAY: Radost FX. Many people will eat dinner at Radost (great vegetarian restaurant) and then hit the club after dinner. Thursdays at Radost are hip hop night. It is possible to buy your own bottle of champagne for 290 Kc (about $12). Anyway, this was definitely a great club. Also where Rihanna shot her music video for “Please Don’t Stop the Music.”

FRIDAY: Lucerna for 80’s and 90’s night. This place is great if you love the music, always packed and usually a good time. It’s a huge venue, and they pack the place with beautiful people and they have a huge stage which all the Americans get on and just take over the place.

SATURDAY: While we were not in Prague for very many Friday or Saturday nights, when we were there we went to Duplex or SaSaZu. Both clubs could be great on Fridays as well. Duplex is on Wenceslas Square and is a rooftop club overlooking the entire square. One of the nicest and trendiest clubs in Prague, Mick Jagger celebrated his 60th birthday there. It’s expensive but an awesome spot with great music. I went to SaSaZu a few times and loved it every time. It was voted top club in Prague in 2009 (the year it opened) and apparently it has a sick Asian fusion restaurant as well. Awesome venue, big dance floor, hot girls. Sasazu also puts events on throughout the semester like the Traffic Light Party which was great as well as rap battles etc and hosts concerts, could hold over 1,000 people and it was probably my favorite club in Prague.

A few other places you must go to include Nebe, Beer Factory and Karlovy Lazne. Beer Factory probably was my favorite place in Prague. It’s a place where they have kegs attached to the tables and you just pour as much beer as you want, and it’s not too expensive. The tables all compete against each other.

Have fun! And get sleep because this city is exhausting!
